Lifetime Achievement Award – Charleen Lauer

The following was read at the Department of Washington Annual Convention Banquet on 19 June 2026:

Tonight, we have the honor of recognizing an extraordinary Auxiliary member whose dedication, leadership, and service have spanned nearly seven decades.

Even before tonight’s honoree was eligible to join the VFW, she often joined her grandmother’s crusade to distribute buddy poppies at some of the more interesting places in downtown Seattle. This usually meant setting up in front of a local tavern or bar to persuade the patrons that if they had enough money for a beer, surely they could afford to donate to help veterans. This ploy usually worked well and Char learned from the best that a dime or quarter could be coaxed from the most frugal customer if it was going to make a difference in the lives of veterans.

Spry as ever, Char nearly ran away from her escort as the room stood and cheered for her award.

After this apprenticeship was served in her early teen years, our recipient became a member of the VFW Auxiliary in 1959 at the age of 16, following a proud family tradition of service. Her grandparents and parents were deeply involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and she has continued that legacy with unwavering commitment throughout her life.

She joined the Auxiliary at Fort Lawton in the Seattle area and later transferred to the Ballard Auxiliary when Fort Lawton disbanded. At just 18 years old, she accepted her first leadership position and has served as an officer for much of her membership. Her willingness to lead and serve has made a lasting impact on every Auxiliary she has called home.

After moving to the Wenatchee Valley, she became a member of the East Wenatchee Auxiliary, where she faithfully served as Treasurer for many years. Her dedication, reliability, and tireless volunteer spirit have benefited not only our veterans and their families, but also countless members of the community.

For almost 70 years, she has exemplified the ideals of the VFW Auxiliary through her service, leadership, and devotion to our mission. Her remarkable commitment makes her truly deserving of this honor.
